REVELATIONS ARTICLE

VACATIONS, STAY-CATIONS and HOME SWEET HOME!

Just before leaving for Iowa with Susan last July, I asked the congregation to bring back bulletins from any churches they might attend while traveling this summer, and though we don’t have quite enough for the bulletin board I envisioned, we have sufficient to tell us a few things about ourselves.

1.  CPC MEMBERS GET AROUND – Despite the economy, many of us still managed to get out of town for awhile.  I got bulletins from as far as Egg Harbor City, New Jersey; Hagerstown, Maryland; Atlanta and as close as Riviera P.C. on Sunset Drive.

2.  ALL CHURCHES HAVE UPS AND DOWNS – One of the congregations someone visited had 10 pastors on staff; two others had been looking for a Pastor for some time (like us!).  In “From the Pastor” on the front page, one minister wrote that it was good to be back from his sabbatical, but during his time off he had been called by another church, and his last sermon would be the Sunday after next.   Problems – everybody’s got ‘em!

3.  SOME AT CPC MAKE WORSHIP A WAY OF LIFE – A few years back I started thinking about Sunday morning as the day and time for my once a week “appointment with God” whether I was leading worship or not.  I was pleased to find that apparently some CPC members are discovering this, too.  You can’t help but feel happier in your faith the more you think of worship as part of your weekly routine, as something you do instead of something you “have” to do.  Instead of worship being an obligation,  it ought to be more a natural expression of who we are and what kind of people God is shaping us to be -- more a matter of character than duty.  Of course we attend church on our vacation – we eat on our vacation too, don’t we?

4.  AND BE IT EVER SO HUMBLE … there’s no place like CPC!  Talking with some elders the other day, one told me that for years he’s taken a little survey of new members, asking them why they chose to join this church, and time after time he’s heard people say, “it’s because when I came here, I felt like I had come home.”  That’s a hard feeling to find just anywhere.  If you feel this way about CPC, then don’t let the Sabbath find you sleeping in.  Come be with the friends you may see only on Sundays, sing and hear songs they only sing in church these days, and hear some words about the blessings that being a Christian brings to everyday living.

We’re all geared up and ready for another Program Year.  See you in church at CPC!

Sincerely, in Christ,                                                                                           Pastor Jack Krch
